Iron Sentry: The sentry strikes at Mira, who has been working its exposed collar pin.
The Iron Sentry snaps its glass eye toward Mira at its frost-bared collar. With the alarm bell still bound in her wire, it twists its sword arm free and cuts down at her on the cramped stair. Bramble is barely upright behind his shield; the gate strikes iron again behind the party.

Mira wrenches at the frost-cracked pin, but the sentry jerks its collar away; her blade skates across iron rather than breaking its sword arm. The wire still muffles the bell. Bramble sways at the stair, one clean hit from falling, while the gate pounds behind you. Fable, your turn: can you get Bramble clear or protect him before the sentry swings again?
I slip around Bramble’s shield, twist my dagger in the frost-cracked collar pin, and wrench hard to break the sentry’s sword arm. The bell stays wired shut.

The blade strikes the stair rail instead of Ilex; sparks jump, but he is unhurt. The sentry drags its sword free while Mira keeps its bell jammed. Ilex, you have the opening now: Bramble is barely standing at 1/13 HP, and the frosted collar pin remains exposed. What do you do?
Iron Sentry: It thrusts its longsword past Bramble toward Ilex, the unshielded spellcaster behind him.
The iron sentry twists against the dagger lodged at its frost-bared collar pin. Its glass eye fixes on Ilex beyond Brambles shield, and it thrusts its longsword through the narrow stair toward the wizard. The alarm bell remains bound by Miras wire; the gate hammers behind the party.

Mira's dagger finds the white-frosted lower pin with a hard metallic crack. The blow beats the sentry's guard, and its glass eye jerks away from Bramble; her wire still holds the alarm bell silent. Bramble sags behind his shield, barely upright, while the gate hammers once behind them. Fable, the opening is yours: reach Bramble or press the damaged pin before the machine recovers.
I keep the coin-wire taut, slip around its sword arm while Bramble has its attention, and drive my dagger at the frost-bared lower pin. Then I angle its glass eye away from Bramble.

The longsword gets past Bramble’s shield and cuts across his side for 4 slashing damage. He is still standing at 1/13 HP, but one more clean blow could drop him. The bell remains caught on Mira’s wire, and Ilex has the next turn: the exposed lower pin is frosted over, Bramble is between the sentry and the others, and the gate behind them keeps jolting. What do you do?
Iron Sentry: The sentry swings its longsword at Bramble, the wounded fighter holding the narrow stair.
Fable’s opening closes unanswered. The sentry wrenches against Mira’s coin-wire; its bell gives a strangled click, not a ring. It plants one iron foot on the stair and brings its longsword around Bramble’s shield. Ilex, you are next in the initiative as the blade falls.

Mira cannot find a clean opening and ducks behind the jammed collar instead. The iron sentry's glass eye sweeps past her toward wounded Bramble; coin-wire twangs against the alarm pawl, one hard pull from ringing. Fable, you have the next opening—what do you do?

Ilex's needle of rime flashes across the sentry's exposed collar, whitening the lower pin beside Mira's dagger. The spell's recorded result gives no attack roll or damage, so the iron body remains at 17/17 HP; the bell wire is still jammed, not severed. Bramble holds the stair at 5/13 HP while Fable has room to reach him. The sentry's glass eye tracks the frost toward Ilex. Mira, the pin is in front of you again—what do you do?
I trace the frost-bared pin with one steady finger and send a needle of rime into its collar. Mira, watch the bell wire; Bramble, keep your shield between its blade and Fable. Let us see which gear balks first.

Mira's dagger finds the frost-bared pin, but the point glances off its iron collar. No wound opens in the machine. The coin-wire holds the bell to a strangled click as the sentry turns its glass eye from Bramble toward her. Bramble is still bleeding on the stair; Fable has a heartbeat to help him before the blade comes round again.
I slip along Bramble’s shield-side and drive my dagger into the frost-bared lower pin, using his pressure to land a sneak attack before the bell can ring.

Iron Sentry: The sentry cuts at Bramble across the narrow stair while Mira crowds its exposed lower pin.
Mira’s blade skates off the frost-bared pin. The sentry’s half-caught bell gives one dry click; its glass eye fixes on Bramble’s shield, and the arm-blade snaps across the narrow stair toward him. Mira still has the exposed pin at her shoulder, but the machine will not wait for another careful strike.

Mira's dagger strikes the frost-bared lower pin but skates off the iron collar. The sentry takes no damage. Her coin-wire still bites into the hinge; the bell gives one muffled tremor instead of ringing. The sentry's blade scrapes the stair where she ducked, and its glass eye begins to turn back from Ilex's glimmer. Bramble holds the narrow step, Fable is just behind him, and the gate shudders again at their backs.
I slip beneath its drawn blade and drive my dagger into the frost-bared lower pin, twisting the jammed coin-wire to keep that bell silent. One clean strike, then I duck aside.

Ilex's frost draws the sentry's next blade arc across the stair before the iron moves. Its glass eye follows his glimmer; Mira can see the exposed lower pin beneath her jammed wire. The half-struck bell strains against the catch. Bramble has the narrow step between the blade and Fable, while the gate jolts once behind them. Bramble, you're up—hold the line or make room for Mira's strike.
I watch the sentry’s half-chime and trace its next blade-stroke in a thin line of frost across the stair. ‘Mira—when the bell catches, strike the exposed lower pin.’ I keep its glass eye drawn toward my glimmer long enough to give her a clean opening at the jammed neck hinge.
Ilex's frost breaks at the lower pin. Mira twists her coin-wire into it; the sentry's glass eye locks on Bramble's shield and its warning bell catches halfway through a chime. Then a narrow iron blade unfolds from its arm. Behind the party, the gate shudders under the trapped fingertip. The sentry steps down the stair toward Bramble—quiet for now, but no longer harmless.
Ilex kneels at the stairhead and dusts the sentry’s glass eye and neck hinge with a whisper of rime, watching where the frost breaks as Mira works her wire. ‘The eye turns on the lower pin,’ he murmurs. ‘Still that pin first; Bramble, keep its gaze on your shield.’
I slip low along the stair wall while Bramble draws the sentry’s glass eye. I circle to its blind side and jam my coin-wire into the hinge behind its head before it can sound an alarm. ‘Eyes on the shield, little clockwork.’
Bramble slams the iron gate on the hooked fingertip and throws the release wheel home. Then he strides past the lamp, shield raised between Mira and the unfolding sentry. ‘Behind me. I’ll hold the stair.’
Mira’s coin-wire finds solid stone all the way to the lamp. Ilex leads Fable across; his rime stays white beneath them, then blackens on the gate’s outer hinge. The next knock lands. A dark fingertip hooks through the bars just as the release wheel jerks under Bramble’s hand. He can slam the gate on it now. Beyond the pale lamp, a narrow stair drops into a room where one small iron sentry unfolds from the wall and turns its single glass eye toward Mira. The way forward is clear for a breath, but no longer empty.
I take Fable by the bridle and follow Mira’s tested line through Bramble’s open gate toward the pale lamp. At the threshold I brush a thin rime mark onto the iron: white if the way stays true, black if the listening hand follows. ‘Keep the lamp ahead and the knock behind us,’ I whisper, leaving Bramble room to close the gate.
I dart through the gap Bramble opens, keeping low beside the iron gate. I test the floor toward the pale lamp with my coin-wire, scan for a catch or ambush, and wave Fable and Ilex through only if the way holds. ‘Quick feet. Quiet feet.’
Bramble plants his shield between Fable and the darkening wall-door, strides to the iron gate, and heaves its release wheel before the next knock. ‘Through to the lamp—Mira first, Fable between us.’ He holds the gate open for his companions, watching their rear.
Ilex's rime-line stays white beneath Fable's hoof. Then its outer edge turns black: the listening hand has found the wall-door, but it has not crossed. The fourth knock slams through the brass cylinder. Bramble feels the latch tug against his grip, and Mira's wire sings as the shutter takes the strain. Ahead of Mira, the tested foothold leads to a short passage ending at a waist-high iron gate; beyond it, a pale service lamp still burns. A release wheel sits on this side. The party is through together, with one narrow beat to turn that wheel before the next knock pulls the wall-door shut or brings the hand closer.
I guide Fable through the true wall-door behind Bramble’s shield, then follow Mira onto the tested footing. With one gloved finger I draw a thin rime-line across the inner threshold, watching whether the listening hand stains it from behind. ‘Keep the door between us and the fourth knock,’ I whisper.
I slip through the wall-door Bramble holds, test the first foothold with my coin-wire, and flatten into the hinge-side shadow to scout ahead. ‘Footing’s good. Fable, follow my heels—quietly.’
Bramble wedges his shield between Fable and the listening hand, grips the lifted latch at Ilex’s bright seam, and heaves the wall-door open before the fourth knock. ‘Mira, through first—find our footing. Fable, stay behind me.’ He holds the opening for the whole party.
The third knock lands. Ilex's rime leaves the false seam dark and draws a bright line around the real one. Bramble's pull-ring shudders, and a narrow latch lifts inside the wall; Mira can reach it from the landing without crossing back over her wire. Behind them, the shutter takes the knock and holds—but the black pinprick on its far side spreads into the shape of a listening hand. Fable hears a fourth knock beginning deep in the cylinder. Mira has the true seam and Ilex's help; the party has one beat to open it or choose another stand.
Ilex keeps clear of Mira’s anchored wire and lays two fingertips against the wall beside Bramble’s pulled ring. A thread of rime traces the vibration from the third knock, showing which seam answers the ring and which only echoes the shutter. ‘There—the answering line. Mira, test that one; Bramble, keep Fable behind your shield until it holds.’
As Bramble hauls the ring, Mira loops her taut coin-wire around the true tooth and a fixed brass rivet, securing the shutter against the third knock. She slips to the landing’s outer edge and checks the ring-wall seam for a safe way forward. ‘Catch is tied. What did that ring wake?’
Bramble plants his shield between Fable and the frost-marked shutter, then strides to the dry landing and hauls the brass pull-ring before the third knock can finish. ‘Mira, hold that tooth. Everyone, behind my shield.’
The cylinder gives its second knock. Ilex's hairline frost flashes white across the threshold—then one black pinprick appears on the hatchward side, not beneath anyone's feet. The print has found the shutter, but not the way through. Mira's wire shivers around the true tooth and holds; beyond it, her scout's path opens onto a narrow dry landing with a single brass pull-ring set into the wall. A third knock begins to gather inside the cylinder. The party can pull the ring or secure the shutter before that beat arrives.
Ilex slips through the shoulder-wide shutter behind Fable, keeping clear of Mira’s taut coin-wire. With a fingertip he draws a narrow line of rime along the threshold and watches how it answers the next knock; if the dark print follows, its touch will show. ‘The true tooth is held. Keep moving—and mind what the frost remembers.’
Mira snaps her coin-wire tight around Ilex’s marked tooth on the second knock, pins the shutter catch, then slips through beside Bramble’s shield to scout the far side. ‘Gap’s ours. Ilex, move.’
Bramble drives his shield under the shrinking shutter and plants the brass receiver against the true second-knock tooth, giving Mira a steady point for her waiting wire. ‘Pin it now. Fable, behind me.’ He shoulders through the narrow gap first, keeping his shield between Fable and the dark fingertip at the sealed hatch, and holds the opening for Ilex and Mira.
Ilex's rime blooms across the exposed teeth. On the first knock, three teeth glitter; on the second, only his marked tooth moves. Mira's wire is already laid beside it—one pull can pin the true catch. The shutter narrows to a shoulder's width. Behind Bramble's shield, the hatch frost stays white, then a single dark fingertip prints against its far side. Fable sees it first. The next knock is coming: hold the tooth, cross the shutter, or turn back to face what is testing the lid.
Ilex kneels beside Mira without touching her taut coin-wire and breathes a thin veil of rime over the cylinder's exposed teeth. He watches which tooth frosts first on the receiver's answering knock, then marks that tooth with pale light so Mira can pin the true catch before the shutter closes. 'The second knock drives it. Hold this tooth, Mira; Bramble, keep the receiver still. Fable, watch the white frost at the hatch—if it darkens, tell us.'
Mira skims the chamber wall to the brass cylinder, threads her coin-wire through the toothed wheel, and catches a tooth before the next double knock can pull the shutter shut. She tests the catch from the side, leaving the opening clear. ‘Bramble, keep that receiver steady. I’ve bought us a beat.’
Bramble ducks through on Mira’s wire-marked foothold, drags the iron hatch down behind his shield, and sets his shoulder against its catch before the next knock. ‘All below. Lid shut. Mira, lead for that cylinder—I’ll keep the dark on this side.’
Ilex's rime stays white along the hatch's inner lip. On the stair side, one hairline turns black: the print has reached the lid, but not crossed it. His low light finds a narrow chamber below, where a brass cylinder gives the same two knocks as the receiver in Bramble's hand. Each knock turns a toothed wheel and draws a small shutter closer to closed. Mira's wire has marked the safe foothold; Fable is beside Ilex. Bramble has one clean beat to come through and shut the hatch before the next knock changes the route.
Ilex guides Fable down Mira's wire-marked footholds and follows beneath the hatch, keeping his pale wizardlight low. At the rim he draws a fine rime-sigil across the iron: if the dark print touches it, frost will blacken toward the pursuer and show which side is truly breached. 'The knocks answer the receiver, not the thing behind us. Bramble, come through and shut the lid; Mira, lead us to the source.'
Mira slips beneath Bramble’s raised hatch ahead of Fable, coin-wire feeling for the first sound foothold and any trip at the rim. She hugs the hinge-side shadow, knife ready, and beckons the others down. ‘Feet where my wire points. Bramble, then slam it.’
Bramble keeps his shield square to the blackening stair as he backs to Mira’s marked hatch. On the receiver’s next returning beat, he seats its brass tip in the socket and heaves the iron lid open. ‘Down, all three. I’m last.’ He holds the opening for the party without surrendering the rear guard.
Ilex's frost holds a clean line on the inner stair. On the receiver's second pulse, the line blackens one step behind Bramble's shield: the dark print has found the threshold, but it has not overtaken them. Ahead, Mira's three scratches lead to a small iron hatch where the stair ends. From beneath it comes one deliberate knock, then a second—answering the receiver, not the pursuer. The hatch has a thumb-sized brass socket; the next pulse is already building. All four have reached the stair. Do they seat the receiver and open the hatch, or stop to bar the print behind them?
Ilex follows Mira’s three scratches onto the service stair, then draws his rime-line inward from the threshold in one thin, unbroken thread. He watches the dark print on the lantern side: if it advances on the receiver’s second pulse, the frost will blacken behind them, not before them. ‘All four are through. Leave the catch; follow Mira’s marks. Bramble, guard the stair, not the door.’ He keeps the wizardlight low on the safe treads and listens for any answering step from below.
Mira slips down the service stair ahead of the party, coin-wire testing each tread and the wall for a hidden trip. She marks the safe line with three quick scratches and finds the first blind corner before the listener can follow. ‘Clear feet here. Bramble, bring them down—I have the flank.’
On the receiver’s second pulse, Bramble hooks Fable close behind his shield and drives them both across Ilex’s bright threshold. He wedges his shield rim under the closing catch just long enough for Fable to clear, then wrenches it free and plants himself on the service stair between the party and the dark print. ‘All through. Mira, lead down; I hold the rear.’
Ilex's rime-line holds: on the receiver's second pulse, the hidden threshold gleams and a narrow service stair resolves beyond Mira. A beat later, one dark print flowers in the frost—on the lantern side of the door, not behind her. The glass gives a dry crack under Bramble's shield. The catch is open, but already drawing shut; Bramble and Fable can cross on the next pulse if they move now.
Ilex follows Mira through the true square, one hand on the stone. He draws a thin rime-line across the threshold: the receiver's second pulse makes the safe edge shine, while any answering footprint will bloom dark against the frost. ‘Bramble, bring Fable through on that pulse. Mira, watch the far side. I will tell us if the listener follows.’
Mira follows the pale seam to the square wall, slips coin-wire under its edge, and lifts the catch on the receiver’s second pulse. She ghosts through first, eyes on the floor and the listener’s flank. ‘True door. Follow my feet.’
Bramble sets his shield against the bulging black glass, then presses the warm brass receiver to the true square of wall on its second pulse. 'Mira, take the opening. Fable, behind my shield. I hold the listener here.'
Ilex’s frost catches the next knock and makes it visible: a pale seam runs from the dark lantern to a square of wall above the drop, while three false seams fade under the rime. The brass receiver warms in Bramble’s hands and answers with a second, softer pulse. Then the lantern’s black glass bulges inward, as though something on the other side has placed a paper-thin palm against it. Mira has a true route to follow; Bramble has the receiver; the listener has only just found them.
Ilex lays two fingers on the dark lantern glass and lets a hairline rime-sigil drink the next knock. Frost maps the returning vibration across the wall, separating the listening seam from its decoy echoes. “It answers the receiver, not our fear. Bramble, hold the true seam; Mira, follow its second pulse. Fable, keep the landing bright.”
Mira ghosts wide of Bramble’s shield, slips coin-wire beneath the dark lantern’s rim, and tests the wall’s answering seam from the side. "I’ll find its ear—hold the knock."
Bramble plants his shield between the dark lantern and the party, clamps the brass receiver to its rim, and steps into the knock’s answer. He keeps Fable behind his shoulder and calls low: ‘Mira, find the seam. Ilex, keep the true edge bright. Whatever listens, it meets my shield first.’
Ilex’s second sigil catches the receiver’s echo. The false seams go dull, and for one clean breath the bright rail carries the whole party onto a narrow landing. Then the last lantern gutters out. Behind its dark glass, something in the wall answers the receiver with one slow, deliberate knock. The ledge is safe—for now. Who moves first?
Ilex presses two fingers to the folding rail and lays a second rime-sigil over the receiver’s echo. The true edge rings bright while every returning seam turns dull and slow. “The cup is seated; now the rail must remember it. Bramble, keep Fable inside the bright line—Mira, take the next shadow only when it answers.”
Mira skims the folding rail’s inner seam, lashes coin-wire from the seated receiver to the true ledge, and slips ahead to mark the first safe shadow. "Line stays ours. Fable, on my heels—move."
Bramble counts the patient clicks, then on the third echo locks the brass receiver into the waiting cup with a hammering palm. He sweeps Fable across the bright ledge beneath his shield and plants himself at the folding rail, shoulder first. ‘Receiver seated. Fable through. Mira, keep the edge true; Ilex, freeze the false count. I hold the way.’
Ilex’s frost catches the second click and the false stone goes dark. On the echo, the true ledge rings once beneath the party; the receiver-shaped cup opens like a waiting hand. Then the lantern rail starts folding backward into the wall. Bramble has one clean chance to carry Fable across and seat the receiver on the third breath—Mira and Ilex can keep the edge honest, but not for long.
Ilex listens through two patient clicks, then dusts the true ledge and receiver-cup with a rime glyph. The frost brightens only on the return beat, leaving the hollow stone black. “Cross on the echo. Bramble, seat the receiver on the third breath; I will keep the false rhythm cold.”
Mira pads onto Ilex’s bright edge, hooks coin-wire round the brass rail, and tests the hollow steps with a tossed shard before waving Bramble and Fable across. "Wire holds. One breath each—follow my feet."
Ilex’s frost turns the lantern line from a tunnel into a map: three hollow steps yawn beneath the next run, but a narrow true ledge reaches a low landing where the brass rail ends in a receiver-shaped cup. From the dark below comes a patient click—then another—as if something is counting the party’s breaths. The door behind them gives a final scrape inward. One clean crossing remains.
Ilex slips through the lantern line and lays a thin rime-sigil along its rail; false shadows drink the frost, but the sound footing gleams back toward the shrinking ledge. "Follow the bright frost. The counting below marks the hollow steps—leave them empty."
Mira ghosts through the finger-wide gap after Fable, leaves coin-wire looped on the door’s inner latch, and scouts the first lantern shadow for a safe rearward route: "I’m through. Door stays ours—move."
Bramble sets the crown key with one iron hand, shoulders the black-stone door wide with the other, and plants his shield between the descending lantern line and the party. He sends Fable through first, then advances after them: ‘Through now. Mira, take the rear; Ilex, keep the true note bright. I hold the line.’
The bottom keyhole takes Mira’s wire, the middle answers on the receiver’s echo, and the crown turns under Bramble’s hand. The black-stone door opens only a finger-width—enough to show a descending lantern line and hear something below counting the rail’s missing teeth. The far ledge is already shrinking. Move through now, or spend the last breath holding the door.
Ilex brushes rime across all three keyholes and watches where the frost fractures as Mira holds the bottom tooth. Only one sequence carries the receiver’s returning note, so he stills the false clicks with a whispered sigil: "Bottom first—then the middle on its echo. Bramble, turn the crown last; the rail keeps one breath."
Mira slips a coin-wire pick into the lowest keyhole while the hand is leashed, listens for the one honest click, then palms the other two tumblers still: "Bottom tooth leads. Rail, hold one breath."
The receiver rings once, and Ilex’s bright frost resolves the folding rail into one narrow, honest crossing. Bramble and Fable reach the far ledge while Mira’s coin-wire holds the tearing hand against the frozen tooth. Then a low black-stone door wakes ahead: three shallow keyholes turn together, each click drawing another notch of rail into the wall. The way forward is real, but it is already closing.
Ilex lays a thin rime-sigil along the folding rail, listening for the receiver’s returning bell-note; every false seam frosts dull while the true edge rings clear beneath Bramble’s boots. "The rail remembers the receiver, Bramble. Follow the bright frost—one sure crossing before it folds."
Mira skims the folding rail’s seams, loops coin-wire through the tearing paper wrist and the counter’s frozen third tooth, then snaps a shard beneath the line. "Hand leashed. Rail’s true edge is free—move."
Bramble locks the brass receiver into the loose rail cup with a hammer-blow, sweeps Fable onto the true edge beneath his shield, and strides across the black drop. He braces the folding rail with his shoulder until the others have their line: "Fable with me. Mira, keep that hand pinned; Ilex, mark our edge. We cross now."
Ilex’s frozen third tooth catches the counter at its pause. The fresh-cut passage releases the party into a cramped relay chamber where a brass return rail runs across a black drop; one loose cup is waiting for the receiver, but the rail is already folding back into the wall. The paper hand’s trapped wrist begins to tear free behind them. The crossing is clear for a few heartbeats—Bramble, lock the receiver into the rail and take Fable across; Mira, keep the hand on the counter; Ilex, mark the true edge before the machine takes it away.
Ilex traces his last rime along the third backward-turning tooth, freezing it at the pause rather than fighting the whole mechanism. The counter stutters open for one breath; he points through the gap: "The third tooth remembers the pause. Bramble, carry Fable now; Mira, let the hand pull only against my frost."
Mira keeps one boot on the warm catch, loops coin-wire around the caged paper hand’s wrist, and anchors it to the backward-turning counter. She palms a shard into the next tooth: "Hand snared. Catch holds—through, now."
Bramble clamps the brass receiver to his shield, sweeps Fable through the fresh-cut passage, and plants himself in the narrowing doorway with one boot against the backward-turning counter. “Fable through. Mira, keep that catch lifted; Ilex, freeze the last tooth. I hold the line.”
Ilex’s frost makes the choice plain. The warm left plate answers the receiver with one clean bell, and Mira’s lifted catch turns beneath Bramble’s gauntlet. The service door opens just wide enough for the party to pass, revealing a narrow passage of fresh-cut stone and a brass counter whose last three teeth begin to turn backward. Behind them, the caged paper hand pulls hard against Mira’s wire. The route is real—but it is closing. Bramble, get Fable through; Mira, hold the catch; Ilex, spend the last rime where it buys the most time.
Ilex presses the last of his rime into three hairline sigils across the blank plates, letting the receiver's bell-note ring only through the warm left one while frost dulls the two cold decoys. "The left plate returns the bell. Bramble, bring Fable through it; Mira, keep the catch honest. I will hold the false notes silent."
Mira ghosts to the warm left plate, feels its bell-note through coin-wire, and slips a pick beneath its blank face to lift the hidden catch before the frost cracks. "Warm plate’s live. Door opens—quiet feet."
Bramble drops to the landing with his shield over Fable, plants one boot against the brass eye, and seats the receiver against the warm left plate. "Fable behind me. Mira, take the live plate. Ilex, make this pause last."
Ilex’s rime takes the fourth bite out of the brass eye. The stamped hand jerks against Mira’s wire and stays caught; for one clean pause, the landing below is still. Beyond it waits a waist-high service door with three blank brass plates. The receiver gives one soft bell-note, and the left plate answers with a faint warmth. The other two remain cold—until the frost begins to crack. Bramble can bring Fable down and hold the eye, Mira can test the warm plate or work the lock, and Ilex can spend the last of the pause on whichever choice they make.
